This summer, Arabia’s Moomin dishes welcome an awaited addition with new summer products. The collection that was introduced four years ago now receives its final illustration, bringing the story to a happy close.
The seasonal mug of this summer, “Moment on the shore” draws sweet and delicate emotions as Moomintroll falls for Primadonna, a picture-perfect circus star who has been stranded in Moominvalley due to a flood. The men get fed up with the ladies’ jealousy, and the party is split in two. With the men and women setting up separate camps, who better to serve as a messenger between them than Primadonna’s horse, who was introduced in the mug from summer 2012.
Arabia traditionally introduces new seasonal products to complement its established and beloved collection of character mugs. Designer Tove Slotte’s work brings in lesser known characters, using illustrations to tell a continuous story. The seasonal summer products are only available for a limited time.
The 2015 summer dishes are the last in the collection, which began when Primadonna’s horse greeted the audience in 2012. Thus began the story which now comes to a happy ending, when after a brief adventure, Moomintroll ends up back together with Snorkmaiden – as smitten as ever.
The illustrations for “Moment on the shore” arise from one of Tove Jansson’s first comics, Moomintroll falls in love. It’s been raining in Moominvalley for months on end, leading to an enormous flood. The Moomin family sets out to save the stranded, and soon Moomintroll sees an entire circus taken over by the deluge. While he wonders whether the circus’ Primadonna has already been rescued, he comes upon her horse. Later that evening he finds the enchanting Primadonna and immediately falls head over heels.
Soon Moomintroll and Emeraldo – the strongman of the circus – find better company in each other than in the ladies, who have grown jealous and demanding. The men set up camp on the shore, where they fish and bask in the sun. The women are joined by Mymble and Little My, who do their best to make sure that the men don’t feel welcome. The story ends favorably when Moomintroll gets to rescue the ladies from distress. Primadonna’s horse alerts the men after the Hattifatteners attack the women by night. Thanks to the faithful beast, Moomintroll is able to rescue his true sweetheart – none other than Snorkmaiden. With the adventure now over, the Moomins return on stilts to the Moominhouse, where the floodwater is already receding.
Illustrator Tove Slotte wishes to display the fresh colors of summer while presenting a more narrative take on the seasonal products. Her drawings delve deep into the original story, mixing in a dash of fantasy to whisk the audience away. The supporting characters force the Moomins to adapt to new situations and provoke them to engage in reckless feats. “These themes work extremely well in seasonal products, and the result is a fresh and colorful collection of summer dishes, including ‘Primadonna’s horse’ from 2012, ‘Snorkmaiden and the poet’ from 2013 and ‘Sailing’ from 2014, says Nora Haatainen, product manager of the Moomin products at Arabia.
