The Lakes International Comic Art Festival takes over the whole town of Kendal, on the edge of the Lake District, Cumbria, UK for a weekend each October. This year Tove Jansson’s Moomins are featured on this event celebrating the amazing world of comic artists, creators, and writers. There really is something for everyone, whether you’re a comic veteran, new to comics or just love seeing amazing artists at work!

Panel discussion on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2017 – 14:30 at Main Theatre, Brewery Arts Centre
This year LICAF is celebrating the life and work of novelist, painter, illustrator and comic strip author Tove Jansson. This event explores the phenomenon of the Moomins as well as revealing much more about this extraordinary woman and the huge legacy she has left across the world.
The panel will feature Sophia Jansson (Tove Jansson’s niece and Artistic Director of Oy Moomin Characters Ltd), Tuula Karjalainen (author of ‘Tove Jansson: Work and Love’), Jonathan Edwards (joint-creator with Felt Mistress of ‘Archipelagogo’ a new installation commissioned for LICAF 2017). It will be hosted by comics expert Paul Gravett.
There will be signings immediately after the event with Tuula Karjalainen.

TALES FROM THE NORDIC ARCHIPELAGO exhibition
1 OCTOBER – 2 NOVEMBER 2017 at Kendal Museum
Curated by the Finnish Institute in London and the ICA, this fascinating photographic exhibition, looks at the life and work of Tove Jansson.
The enchanting Moomins family have been delighting readers since their adventures were first published in the 1940s. Original and rare photographs and material relating to Jansson’s life, family and friendships go beyond the Moomins and reveal a highly talented painter and writer of adult fiction. Illustrated books and early first editions of the Moomins are included in the exhibition.
ARCHIPELAGOGO exhibition
1 OCTOBER – 4 NOVEMBER 2017 at Wildman Gallery, Wildman Street
Commissioned by LICAF to celebrate the work of Tove Jansson, this spellbinding multimedia exhibition by super-talented artists Jonathan Edwards and Louise Evans (Felt Mistress) creates a group of fantasy islands (archipelago) and creatures. The exhibition is inspired by the life, work and creativity of Tove Jansson.
