Snufkin’s Family Tree

Snufkin is related to the Mymbles. Several generations of his family are introduced throughout the Moomin stories, many of which first appear in the book The Memoirs of Moominpappa (1950).

In the family tree, created by Tove Jansson, it is explained that young Snufkin was first found in a box.

Snufkin’s mother is Mymble (older): a roundish and very joyful character, who has 37 children in total. Snufkin’s father is Joxter, Moominpappa’s close friend.

Snufkin resembles his father a lot: they share a skinny physique, a fedora hat, and a pipe, as well as a peaceful approach to life. Moominpappa’s memoirs describe Joxter as worry-free and a little lazy, with a dislike for authority figures.

Little My’s father is unknown, and like Sniff, she is adopted by the Moomin family (originally in the comic Moomin Builds a House). Little My is older than Snufkin, Sniff and Moomintroll – Joxter and Mymble (older) meet each other after Little My is already born.

The oldest Mymble is Little My’s grandmother who is described as a fatigued and very tall woman in the story Tale of Horror from the book Tales from Moominvalley (1962).

The aunt of Mymble (older) appears in the story Cedrik in the book Tales from Moominvalley, when Snufkin tells Sniff a story about his mother’s aunt who gave away all her belongings. Snufkin also got his mouth-organ from this great-aunt.

It is clear the free-spirited attitude and vagabond life runs in Snufkin’s family!
