The Tove Jansson Ateneum exhibition: her art and life.

The new Tove Jansson Ateneum exhibition curated by Tuula Karjalainen presents Tove’s life both in broad strokes and in detail – and the Moomins are only half of it.

– I wanted to present the full spectrum of Tove says Tuula Karjalainen. I wanted the exhibition to show everything – from her early work to her last artwork. It has been a journey to discover her full body of work.

But Tove was a productive artist and during the research process they’ve had to leave out 2/3 of all the material they found. Some of the material they found was also in such a bad shape that it could not be put on display.

Regardless, it is a monumental exhibition, the largest about Tove ever staged and in it you can see how multitalented Tove really was. Apart from her paintings, there are theatre posters and costumes, magazine covers, murals and of course illustrations and texts for the stories about Moomin.

Tuula Karjalainen and her team have even been able to borrow the puppets from the first TV series about the Moomins.

The basis for the exhibition is the work Tuula did for her recent book: Tove Jansson: Work and Love.
